Is Lower Back Pain Holding You Back From Doing the Activities You Love?

Millions of Americans will suffer from lower back pain at some point in their lives. If you’re one of them, you don’t have to let it stop you from visiting family and friends, going to the movies or a sporting event, or even gardening or walking.

There’s no need to be sidelined by back pain anymore. There are things you can do at home to treat it, but our pain specialists at Proactive Medical Center in Duluth, Georgia, can also help. Learn how to handle back pain and get your life back.

What causes lower back pain?

Our lower back works hard to support us while we’re standing. Any time we bend over or rotate our waist, the lower back is involved. That’s why you may hurt your lower back when you reach for something. Lifting heavy objects from your back instead of your legs also causes lower back pain.

These are probably just muscle sprains or strains that can be healed with rest, ice or heat, and gentle stretches. But give us a call for a comprehensive exam if your pain gets worse.

How to prevent lower back pain

The best treatment for lower back pain is to avoid getting it in the first place. If you stay active, maintain a healthy weight, and wear supportive shoes, you could lower your risk of developing lower back pain. Also, if you work on a computer for hours at a time, remember to take breaks, stretch, and walk around. The same is true for long drives in the car. Be sure to stop in a safe area to stretch every hour or two.

Always practice good posture and remember to bend your legs and lift heavy objects from your legs instead of your back. When you go to sleep at night, try sleeping on either side with a pillow placed between your knees. This will alleviate pressure from your lower spine. By practicing some of these tips, you should be able to reduce your back pain and get back out there to do the things you love.

Sometimes, back pain is caused by trauma from a car accident or a fall. These are obviously out of your control, but we urge you to be careful while driving and when using ladders.
